T-Mobile-Sprint merger would not have created value-D.Telekom CEO

FRANKFURT, Nov 7 (Reuters) – Deutsche Telekom ended talks on a merger between its T-Mobile US business and Sprint Corp because it would not have created value, CEO Tim Hoettges told staff after the deal collapsed at the weekend. Hoettges said he flew 50,000 km in seven days to try to save the deal, meeting Masayoshi Son, head of Sprint owner Softbank Corp, at his private home in Tokyo only for the two sides to decide against a deal. “In the end, it is always about creating value for shareholders. Our impression was that this did not work out,” Hoettges […]

T-Mobile is better off without Sprint so are its employees and customers

In the end, the two companies couldn’t agree on a host of details to make their deal work. Here’s why that’s good news. The only losers in the collapse of the T-Mobile and Sprint merger are the players on Wall Street who wanted a quick buck and a few other billionaires, such as Sprint’s Chairman Masayoshi Son. This development is good news for 5,500 T-Mobile headquarters workers in Bellevue, plus thousands more nationwide. The Communications Workers of America estimated that a merger would have killed 20,000 jobs. It’s impossible to know where the combined headquarters would have landed — Bellevue or suburban Kansas City — but the Puget Sound […]

Cricket rolls out a new 4-line $100 unlimited data plan

Cricket is well known for their aggressive pricing and promotions to undercut other prepaid carriers, but their newest plan is really something to take a look at. It’s a fully unlimited plan, including talk, text, and data, and it works with four lines for just $100. $25 per line for totally unlimited usage isn’t bad at all. There aren’t any crazy catches with the Unlimited 2 plan, either. The data speed is capped at 3mbps just like AT&T’s Unlimited Choice packages, but otherwise, you’re free to use as much data as you want however you want. And sure, 3 isn’t great, but it […]

Sprint sues 20 employees for unlocking cellphones

Sprint Corp. is suing 20 unnamed employees as a result of a sting operation, The Kansas City Star reports. The Overland Park-based wireless carrier filed a 14-page lawsuit against Uzbekistan resident Adik Kummetov and a group of employees, who are referred to as “John Does 1 through 20.” The suit charges that the defendants conspired to unlock Sprint phones so that they could be used on other networks. The lawsuit claims that Kummetov offered customer care employees $10 per device. The Star reports that the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Kansas, said Sprint recently discovered that “unknown customer care support employees or employees […]

AT&T says all U.S. states will use its public safety network

NEW YORK (Reuters) – AT&T Inc said on Friday that all 50 U.S. states had decided to participate in the nationwide broadband network it is building for first responders as part of a $6.5 billion government contract. In March, the U.S. government awarded a contract to AT&T to build the network, years after a federal commission recommended setting up such a system following the 9/11 attacks. The No. 2 U.S. wireless carrier will receive 20 megahertz of wireless airwaves and success-based payments of $6.5 billion over the next five years as part of the project known as FirstNet. AT&T expects […]

AT&T to Offer Mobile 5G Wireless Phone Service This Year

Now that the industry has settled on a spec for 5G, carriers are racing to use it — and AT&T hopes to be one of the first. It just unveiled plans to launch spec-based mobile 5G (not the fixed-in-place kind) to everyday consumers in 12 cities by late 2018. It’s not specific about where those markets are or which devices will be the first to adopt the faster speeds, but the arrival of the 5G spec has kicked off the start of hardware development. While 5G technology offers a path for a slowing industry to revive growth, challenges abound. Mobile-phone […]
